Beaches
Martha's Vineyard is known for having some of the best and most scenic beaches on the east coast. The beaches vary from protected, shallow, clear-water stretches on the northern and eastern sides of the Island to expanses of rumbling surf along the south side.
Many of the vineyard beaches are open to the public without restriction, while some are reserved for residents and summer visitors who are staying in specific towns where the beach may be located. In order to utilize town beaches, you would need a parking and/or beach permit. Permits may be obtained through each local town hall with proof of residency.
Aquinnah
Lobsterville Beach - located on the calm north shore beach. Parking is very limited.[Resident Permit Required]
West Basin - at the end of Lobsterville Beach. Parking is, again, very limited.[Resident Permit Required]
Moshup Beach - a Martha's Vineyard Land Bank property. Expect to pay a hefty day rate to park.
Chappaquiddick
Chappy Point - reachable via the On Time Ferry. Not suitable for swimming.
East Beach - on Chappaquidick, managed by The Trustees of the Reservations. Fee.
Wasque Point - on Chappaquidick, another The Trustees of Reservations property. Great place to enjoy the ponds, ocean and Katama Bay. Some places have riptides. Fee.
Chilmark
Menemsha Public Beach - next to the colorful Menemsha harbor. Safe for kids, with a lifeguard on duty and a roped off area.
Chilmark Pond Preserve - Small, dramatic and isolated, with parking for a few vehicles. [Resident Permit Required]
Great Rock Bight Preserve - off North Road. The trail to the beach is long and steep and has stairs – but is worth it.
Edgartown
Bend-in-the-Road Beach - along Beach Road. Shallow water, small waves and clean sand, with lifeguards in clearly marked roped-off areas.
Lighthouse Beach - (also known as Norton's Point), the harbor beach at Starbuck's Neck. Beautiful spot with calm water, although the harbor is very busy.
Chappy Point - reachable via the On Time Ferry. Not suitable for swimming.
East Beach - on Chappaquidick, managed by The Trustees of the Reservations. Fee.

South Beach - The long, popular south shore beach with fine surf.
Fuller Street Beach - At the end of Fuller Street near Lighthouse Beach
Oak Bluffs
Eastville Point Beach - on the outer harbor side of Vineyard Haven, calm waves, clear water and sunset views.
Oak Bluffs Town Beach - Enormously popular, very narrow beach. Some parts have lifeguards.
Joseph A. Sylvia State Beach - Along Beach Road between Oak Bluffs and Edgartown, a great family beach.
Tisbury
Lake Tashmoo Beach - At the end of Herring Creek Road. Lifeguard on duty.
Owen Park Beach - A harbor beach just a short walk from downtown.
Vineyard Haven Harbor - A narrow strip of land between the Steamship Authority and the Black Dog Tavern. Not great for swimming, but good place to wade.
West Tisbury
Long Point - open to non-residents who purchase stickers from the Trustees of the Reservation.
The tiny beach at Uncle Seth's Pond, a small freshwater pond on Lambert's Cove Road. [Resident Permit Required]
Lambert's Cove Beach - set aside for year-round and summer residents of West Tisbury.[Resident Permit Required]
Sepiessa Point Reservation - a nature preserve. Although you can't reach the beaches without a kayak or canoe, this is a cluttered beach swimming and picnicking spot.
