Thanksgiving

Nikki (My sisters, from left to right: Krista, Erin, Kelly, Trina and Nikki)

It’s a time of year that I always cherish. Having a family of vegetarians, we have a unique Thanksgiving. We do include all of the traditional sides: mashed potatoes, squash, stuffing (with veggie sausage), Pumpkin, Pecan and Apple pie and much, much more. A lot of the fresh produce and delicious ingredients came from local farms such as Whippoorwill Farm and Morning Glory in West Tisbury.

I feel very lucky to have two Thanksgivings; first at my parents’ house and then another Thanksgiving at my fiancé, James, family’s house (James’s Thanksgiving has the traditional turkey).

I am so grateful for all that I have and for all of the special people that I get to share Thanksgiving with!

Wishing you all a very Happy Holiday season!

I’ve been known to be a bit of a “Food Snob.” Friends often ask my opinion of specific restaurants before trying them out.

I have only rave reviews for Copper Wok located on Main Street, Vineyard Haven.

Friendly hostesses greet you at the door, and you then have a choice of three dining experiences.

If you choose to sit up at the bar you will make new friends each time you dine there. Be sure to say “Hi” to Jerry and Ting (Sushi chefs). Watch them create their masterpieces.

Then there’s the communal bar where it would be fun to get a group of friends together as you’re seated across from each other making it easier to share the tasty Pan Asian dishes coming from the kitchen.  This would also be the time to order the Copper Love Boat- twelve pieces of assorted sashimi (Chefs choice), ten pieces Nigiri (Chefs choice), Spicy Tuna Roll, and Special Roll of Choice.  Yum! My mouth is watering.

There are also smaller tables available for a more intimate meal.

The restaurant is decorated in a Pan Asian theme, it’s fun to look around at all the little touches incorporated throughout.  I have to say, one of the bigger pluses to the restaurant is when you are traveling home on the ferry, you can call ahead, and your to-go order will be waiting for you when you arrive.

I hope to see you at Copper Wok soon!

Halloween on Martha’s Vineyard!

Martha's Vineyard Halloween

I know it was a couple of weeks ago, but it was so impressionable that my husband, Owen and I will be making this an annual event.

This year Halloween fell on the weekend that Owen was commuting to the island…we alternate our weekends on and off the island since we also still own a home in Mansfield MA. Besides, Thanksgiving, Christmas and his birthday, Halloween is one of my husband’s favorite holidays. Frankly, it frightens me too much and I am anxious for it to pass. NOT this year. I picked Owen up at 5:45 in Vineyard Haven from the Steamship Authority (which runs year round) and we casually walked up Union Street, crossing Main Street, left on Church and finally a right or left on the infamous William Street. During our walk, we were all smiles and laughter due to the adorable children and most of the adults in and out of the storefronts all dressed in full costume. As we strolled to our William Street destination, the exterior lighting, ghoulish music, dry iced lawns were so impressive. Everyone was full of enthusiasm and having a blast. We later learned that each year there are approximately 700 to 1000 “treaters” that come through to show off their garb and grab a special treat. For safety sake most neighboring roads were closed to vehicle traffic during the prime hours of the evening.

My husband’s exact words when we reached our car to head home, “This was the best Halloween of my entire life!” We are both in our 50’s and as you can imagine have been through our fair share of Halloween events, but this one tops them all. Can’t wait for Halloween 2015 on MV – how about you?
