Sandpiper Interviews David Welch, Photographer Extraordinaire On Martha’s Vineyard

Sandpiper recently got to speak with David Welch, an award winning photographer based on Martha’s Vineyard.

Sandpiper: How did you get into photography? [It was] back in highschool…  I loved the process: composition, calculated exposure, translation from negative to positive, concept to print.  The medium seemed very accessible and I loved its storytelling potential.  I was hooked… Things really got going after undergrad when I worked long, hard summers on MV and travelled through the offseason – camera in tow. I spent a lot of time nurturing my photography studio and I eventually went to grad school getting my MFA in Photography, devoting two years of my life to further my artistic practice and to create work.

How would you describe your style?  Documentarian, non-traditional, I suppose. I feed off my clients’ energy but don’t solely rely on that. I’m pretty [flexible].

How long have you been in the business? I finally launched my commercial and editorial photography business [David Welch Photography] in June of 2006 and have been going strong since; growing the business each year.  It’s a unique place to run your own business and I’m grateful to the community and Island visitors for their support all these years.

Have you ever won any awards? Yes, I’ve been fairly lucky to have won awards and grants for my work as well as had opportunities to be published and exhibited internationally.  I have exhibitions coming up in Brazil and Brussels which I’m very excited about.

What packages do you offer?  I offer one portrait package but more often than not custom tailor packages to suit my clients’ needs.

What are your price ranges? For portraits, $350+

What are your top three locations for family photos? Edgartown Lighthouse, South Beach, Katama.  There are so many others, and I offer recommendations based on where my clients live as well as what they want from their shoot.  I’m happy to travel.

What time of day do you like to see photos taken? It usually depends on the weather but if it’s a beautiful sunny Vineyard day, I’m pushing the shoot off to the late afternoon when the light is magical.

How far in advance would you recommend scheduling appointments? For shoots taking place in peak season (July/August), I recommend booking well in advance.  I include some flexibility in case of bad weather.

Local’s Guide: Vineyard Haven

Homes HoleOriginally named Homes Hole in the eighteenth century, Vineyard Haven is the access point to and from the ‘mainland’. The  Steamship Authority runs in and out of Vineyard Haven on a year round basis, and it’s home to roughly 2,000 year round residents. Here you’ll find quaint little boutiques, restaurants and galleries lining Main Street while wooden boats lazily swaying on their moorings basking in the summer sun in the harbor.

Vineyard Haven is home to the world famous Black Dog company. What originally started as a small Tavern for locals to gather for a decent hot meal on a cold dreary night, has grown to include an internationally known clothing line, cafes, bakeries, a wharf, and last but certainly not least, the Black Dog Tall Ships. The two large Schooners offer one of a kind experiences ranging from sunset sails to kids camps.

Vineyard Haven is also home to The Art Cliff, a small dinner with seating for about fifty that serves breakfast and lunch. The food here is well worth the wait for a table; even in the dead of winter locals are sitting outside waiting for a table. Another amazing bonus? During the summer months The Art Cliff has a food truck that they open in their parking lot between the hours of five PM to two AM for those who may need a late night snack. We recommend you try the garlic truffle fries. While they are available during lunch hours, the fries are so much better from the truck. They add more garlic and truffle oil to them as well as other herbs that just push it over the top. If you’re not in the mood for fries, then go for the double chocolate doughnut holes. Freshly made and dipped in warm frosting, these guys will satisfy even the strongest sweet tooth.

On Fridays during the summer Grace Church is home to incredible Lobster Rolls that are so full of lobster you start to wonder if there’s even bread holding it all in. Just a short walk down Main Street and a on to Woodlawn Ave and you’re there!

Once a year Vineyard Haven is hosts the Tisbury Street Fair. Main Street shuts down to traffic and booths line the streets with live music is played and great events for the kids to enjoy.

Recent cancellations make this beautiful, waterfront home available for most of July and part of August. Take advantage of this opportunity to enjoy this vacation home while you can! Originally built in 1780, this 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom home is located on the water, next to the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club and just a short walk from the heart of Vineyard Haven. The entire first floor has either an exposed ceiling or exposed beams showing off the original wood from 1780. But don’t let that you fool you, the rest of the home has been restored with modern amenities and comforts including large flat screen televisions, updated kitchen and bathrooms, modern appliances, fresh paint, and cozy furniture.

Upstairs you’ll find the bedrooms with sweeping views of the Vineyard Haven Harbor and the Vineyard Sound with Falmouth off in the distance.

The views from upstairs are superb, but perhaps the best feature of this house is that it is steps away from a small public beach. Just walk across the lawn and you’re there!
