Experience Martha’s Vineyard Like A President, or Famous Actor

It’s no secret that Martha’s Vineyard is a favorite vacation destination for at past and present Presidents, many notable political dignitaries (both local and foreign), and countless famous actors, musicians, and artists alike. So what draws them here? Once affectionately known as “Hollywood of the East”, Martha’s Vineyard has been portrayed in many a novel and movie for its picturesque landscapes, pristine beaches, and its privacy. They say ‘what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas’; well the same can be said for Martha’s Vineyard. If you’re traveling to Martha’s Vineyard and want to experience it like the President, or your favorite actor we have got some great tips for you.

First, rent a home “up-island”, what the locals call Chilmark, Aquinnah, and certain areas of West Tisbury; or rent a home on Chappaquiddick. These areas provide you with the sought after privacy you need. You’ll want something with a large yard, a lot of privacy, an ocean view, or even right on the water with a private beach. Explore some examples below.

Property #7754 is magnificent 5 b/r home located  right on Squibnocket Pond. Amenities include a steam room, infinity pool, hot tub, professional grade kitchen, exquisite linens, and much more.

Exterior

Property #2060 is a striking contemporary home set high on a bluff in Chilmark overlooking the ocean. Amenities include sumptuous beddings, a home office, and 180 degree views throughout the home.

Before you even get to the Island you’re going to want to connect with  Deepwater Estate Services, an all-encompassing property management and concierge company, offering unparalleled care of your home and your lifestyle. They will provide you with a fully stocked kitchen, set up an evening with a private chef at your home, and anything else you may need or want during your stay.

Once you’re all settled into your posh home, you’re going to want to get out and explore. But you can’t just walk through town, or lay on the beach. You’re going to explore in style. To really see the island from a perspective many haven’t, look into a private tour of the island through Martha’s Vineyard Tour’s and Excursions. They will take you through the island in a custom tour specific to what you want to do and see.

What’s a trip to Martha’s Vineyard without a little yachting? Spend a day lounging on the deck of Sea Witch as she sails through the Vineyard Sound, or sunbathe on the bow of a yacht while the men fish from the stern.

After all that sun you’ll want to have dinner at one of the many glamorous restaurants we have here on Martha’s Vineyard. Alchemy has always been a spot to see and be seen; enjoy French fine dining surrounded by elegant decor. The Sweet Life is a favorite of  President and First Lady Barack and Michelle Obama for their date night. If you’re looking for something more laid back, the entire Obama family loves eating at Nancy’s on the Oak Bluffs Harbor.

Exciting Ending To The 2013 Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby

On Sunday, October 20, 2013 history was made at the annual awards ceremony for the Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby. For the first time in the Derby, a woman won the brand new Eastern 22′ boat. Jena-Lynn Beauregard took first place for biggest shore bass (weighing in at 34.63 lbs) giving her a 1 in 4 shot at winning the boat. After keys were drawn and all but hers were tested, Ms. Beauregard was the last (wo)man standing waiting for her turn to try the lock. As the silent crowd looked on Ms. Beauregard knew she had the winning key. With her breath held she tried the lock, and CLICK; She won the ultimate grand prize for the Derby from the shore. She told the Martha’s Vineyard Gazette, “It’s overwhelming [and] intense… to be up on the stage with all these great fishermen”. The last time a woman won, which was from a boat, it was in 1993. This marks the first time in the 68 years of the  Derby that a woman has won from the shore.

Jenna wasn’t the only derby winner that day. Sam Bell took home a brand new Chevy Silverado with his winning false albacore weighing in at 13.24 lbs caught from a boat.

Congratulations to all the division category winners for the 2013 Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby. To everyone else who participated and fished their hearts out, at least we have some great fishing stories to tell, and memories were made. The 2014 Derby will be here before we know it. All it takes is just one fish to win it all.

The 68th Annual Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby

derby-logo

September and October are special months on the island. The craziness of the summer has died down, the weather turns from hot and humid to crisp and inviting; perfect fishing weather. Every year from mid-September to mid-October islanders compete in the annual Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby. This year marks the 68th year of good old fashion fishing, and stories of the one that got away. There is no hoopla like the Monster Shark Tournament in July. When the weigh station is open you’ll find children straining their necks to see the fish that were weighed in, adults gathered around the coffee table chatting and catching up with friends after a hectic season, seasoned fishermen who are hoping to make the final four so they may have a chance to win a truck or boat, and men with stunned faces when women come in with fish bigger than theirs, a smirk across her face in sweet victory of the day.

The Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby started in 1946 as a means to extend the season and attract more business to the island in the shoulder season. That first year drew in over 1000 anglers with a simple goal of catching the biggest Striped Bass and Bluefish. The first prize was $1000, the second was a lot in Aquinnah. Since then the derby has grown, categories added, prizes are grander (although you can no longer win a lot of land) including a boat and a truck, and scholarship funds that total more that $64,000 given out to island residents.
