Exhibit Review ~ “One on the Line: The Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby”

One On The LineOn August 30 the Martha’s Vineyard Museum unveiled its newest gallery exhibit called, “One on the Line: The Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby”. The exhibit highlights the 67 year history of the annual Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby.

I am a fisher(wo)man. I love to fish, and look forward to the Derby every year. I register for it as soon as registration is available and even have a number reserved for me; so it’s easy to assume I was looking forward to the unveiling of the Derby exhibit last Friday. After leisurely strolling through the other exhibits I made my way through the crowd of fellow fishermen and women and was surprised with what I encountered. The first thing you’ll notice as you approach the exhibit are the large fish mounted on the walls; each one caught from previous Derby’s. As you look around you’ll see antique fishing gear, buttons and pins from Derby’s past, photos chronicling the history of the Derby, and much more.  I highly recommend coming with a charged cell phone so you can hear oral stories about specific items or events from the Derby’s past.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself and suggest you take the time to go view the exhibit. Ticket prices are $7 for adults and $4 for kids. Visit monday through Saturday 10 – 5 or Sunday noon – 5pm. Located at 59 School Street in Edgartown, the MV Museum is 2 blocks from Historic Downtown Edgartown. The entrance is at the intersection of Cooke and School Streets with parking available off School Street.

Sandpiper Interviews David Welch, Photographer Extraordinaire On Martha’s Vineyard

Sandpiper recently got to speak with David Welch, an award winning photographer based on Martha’s Vineyard.

Sandpiper: How did you get into photography? [It was] back in highschool…  I loved the process: composition, calculated exposure, translation from negative to positive, concept to print.  The medium seemed very accessible and I loved its storytelling potential.  I was hooked… Things really got going after undergrad when I worked long, hard summers on MV and travelled through the offseason – camera in tow. I spent a lot of time nurturing my photography studio and I eventually went to grad school getting my MFA in Photography, devoting two years of my life to further my artistic practice and to create work.

How would you describe your style?  Documentarian, non-traditional, I suppose. I feed off my clients’ energy but don’t solely rely on that. I’m pretty [flexible].

How long have you been in the business? I finally launched my commercial and editorial photography business [David Welch Photography] in June of 2006 and have been going strong since; growing the business each year.  It’s a unique place to run your own business and I’m grateful to the community and Island visitors for their support all these years.

Have you ever won any awards? Yes, I’ve been fairly lucky to have won awards and grants for my work as well as had opportunities to be published and exhibited internationally.  I have exhibitions coming up in Brazil and Brussels which I’m very excited about.

What packages do you offer?  I offer one portrait package but more often than not custom tailor packages to suit my clients’ needs.

What are your price ranges? For portraits, $350+

What are your top three locations for family photos? Edgartown Lighthouse, South Beach, Katama.  There are so many others, and I offer recommendations based on where my clients live as well as what they want from their shoot.  I’m happy to travel.

What time of day do you like to see photos taken? It usually depends on the weather but if it’s a beautiful sunny Vineyard day, I’m pushing the shoot off to the late afternoon when the light is magical.

How far in advance would you recommend scheduling appointments? For shoots taking place in peak season (July/August), I recommend booking well in advance.  I include some flexibility in case of bad weather.
