A Sense of Fall on Martha’s Vineyard

As the leaves turn, the weather cools and the island hustle and bustle transforms into the slow pace way of life “island life”……The shops are offering sales, the restaurants are serving comfort food, and the fact that you can skip the bathing suit and walk around in leggings, boots and a cozy sweater is in my mind a bonus.

My weekends look a little like this…

Dinner with the Fam:

At The Newes from America– Onion rings, and the simple salad with tenderloin is my favorite. While my husband prefers the buttermilk chicken and my 2 year old son eats the fish and chips and of course the pickles and ice cream that our favorite waitresses Ashley brings.

Or date night out: Alchemy is wonderful. The second floor offers a cozy fireplace and a great bar. The risotto balls are amazing and I love the Jonas crab salad.

Sunday morning breakfast: Black Dog for sure, finally no wait! The French toast is my best friend.

A stroll in Vineyard haven, (to walk off the French toast) into Rainy Day to look at the amazing Christmas ornaments and stocking-stuffers they start to set up.

Top it off with leave cleanup and a visit to Morning Glory Farm for a hot apple cider and donuts to go.

Feature Friday ~ Quintessential Chappy Cottage

Front Exterior

Property #310

Chappy Charm at its best! This is a quintessential beach “cottage” with stunning views overlooking the Edgartown outer harbor and lighthouse, just steps away from your own private beach. The history of the property begins with “Menaca” which is Wampanoag for “Head of Land”. This house was first erected around 1885 in Katama as a guest house near the Mattakeeset Lodge. Jimmy Chadwick, an Edgartown entrepreneur, purchased the property and also established the Chappy Beach Club. The house was taken apart after the boards were numbered, transported around to the beach on a barge, and reassembled on the current site in 1910. The numbering can still be seen in the upstairs bedrooms and in most closets. As you approach the house, you cross the harbor on the Chappy ferry, a short distance down the Chappy Road to Caleb Pond Lane, you go up the hill, through a picturesque meadow on either side, to the sweeping views of the harbor usually dotted with lovely yachts. Inside the house you will find top to bottom tastefully and cheerfully decorated and painted interior with many original antiques. On the first floor, there is a full kitchen, charming pantry, laundry room, bath, dining room with a beautiful Venetian chandelier, living room with fireplace, t.v. room and a bedroom with fantastic ocean views.

In addition, there is a large screened in porch, perfect for dining and admiring the truly extraordinary view, day and nighttime when the lights of Edgartown and the lighthouse are visible. On the second floor, there are 5 bedrooms each with its own character, (one with a screened in porch), a half bath, and most rooms have a water view. There’s plenty of room on this 3 acre property for outdoor games, exploring, patio dining, parking and for your enjoyment. There is a private outdoor shower, and it is an easy bike ride or a 10 minute walk to the Chappy ferry. Come to make your own family memories on Martha’s Vineyard in this wonderful and unique house that gives a nod to history and has been owned by the same family for generations!
