About the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society

Founded in 1859, the Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society has the mission of promoting “the pursuit of agriculture, horticulture, land conservation, youth activities, mechanic and domestic arts and encourages the raising and improving of plant and animal stock and the sale of island-grown produce and flowers at local farmer’s markets.” There are more than 1000 seasonal and year-round members in the society who participate in carrying out that mission. The Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society is best known for the annual agricultural fair. The society is located in the town of West Tisbury on a 21-acre site at the Panhandle.

4th of July on Martha’s Vineyard

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!!!!

There is something magical being in New England on the 4th of July. There is something beyond magical to be on Martha’s Vineyard for the 4th. Perhaps it’s our small town atmosphere and our traditions that make me forget that I have stress and worries, and make me feel like I am in Mayberry momentarily. Ever since I was little a large group, including my family, friends, and their families, have always gone to the beach in the late afternoon on the 4th for a cookout, and to watch the fireworks over Edgartown harbor.

There is a dizzying amount of traditions to uphold on Independence Day. The biggest of all is the Edgartown Parade starting at precisely 5 pm, followed by a phantasmagorical display of fireworks at 9 pm. The parade starts at  the intersection of West Tisbury Road and Pinehurst Road, then winds its way through downtown Edgartown. As the parade ambles around each corner, you’ll be privy to veterans displaying their colors, floats themed around their organization, firetrucks flashing their lights and honking for the kids, animals, and even kilt-clad bagpipers (the debate is still up in the air if they are traditional bagpipers or not…). Please be advised that due to security reasons, they are shutting down Edgartown to traffic starting at 3 PM. I suggest either taking the bus, or parking at the Park and Ride on upper main street and walk into town. Handicap parking is available at the Edgartown Yacht Club.

Rising Tide Float

We hope you have a fantastic and memory filled 4th of July.

Island of lights: Illumination on Martha’s Vineyard

grand12

It’s only fitting that the Grand Illumination in Cottage City, Oak Bluffs lands just days before President Obama and his family arrive for their Martha’s Vineyard vacation. Over a century ago, this wonderful tradition was created to welcome the Governor of Massachusetts to the island.

This Wednesday night, August 19, 2009, as the sun sets in Oak Bluffs, the gingerbread cottages at the old campmeeting grounds, hundreds of colorful Chinese and Japanese lanterns are lit – effectively ‘illuminating’ the houses, the ground, the ocean-salty air. Visitors and islanders, newcomers and old friends walk around the campgrounds and sit on porches chatting, enjoying and taking in the sights.

Music can be heard from the center of Cottage City as a Community Sing and a band concert happen in the Tabernacle -the ‘physical and spiritual center of the Campground.’ Built in 1879, the Tabernacle and the community hold weekly church services and many musical events all summer. It’s a beautiful place to listen to music – especially with the glow of lanterns surrounding and adding to the music!
