Time to Catch the Fish of the Day 73rd Annual Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass & Bluefish Derby

September 9th- October 13th
All ages
Registration includes your badge number, pin, and hat for the derby.
Youth $25, Adults $60,
Seniors $35

The derby has been an annual event for 73 years. It brings the community and lovers of fishing together in a multi-week fishing tournament.
The derby was set up to help support the community, and focuses its overall goals on boating safety, conservation causes, and youth organizations. Every year money raised goes to The MV Rod and Gun Club, Red Stocking Fund, American Hero’s Saltwater Challenge, Sancy Pachio Memorial Youth Scholarship, and towards College Scholarships. Last year these contributions were around $43,250.

Weigh In times are 8am-10am and 8pm-10pm daily, at the Edgartown Junior Yacht Club throughout the length of the derby. Don’t have a fish to weigh in? That’s ok head on in anyway, it’s fun to check out what fish are being weighed in, and to see how big they are. During weigh ins you can also check the Board and see who is leading the catch. Gear is available to purchase at the Club House, another great way to support the event if you don’t fish.

Did you catch a fish? There is always someone on the docks available to fillet your fish. That can be a bit of a messy sight, worth checking out if you haven’t before. Fishermen/women can get their fish filleted or can donate. Tons of fish from the Derby is donated for meals to local schools, the local jail, and to elderly services every year.

Daily, weekly, and grand prizes add to the fun for each fish you weigh in. Daily and weekly prizes range from gear to use or wear fishing to monetary winnings. The grand prizes; from shore a Cape Codder 19 Center Console Boat, from boat a 2018 Clay Subaru Car.

Ringing in the New Year on Martha’s Vineyard

 2015_new_year

Like most of you, we are now falling back into our routines after a lovely holiday season. It felt good to clear out the decorations and get my living room back to normal, call it quits early last night and have an early start this morning. I love heading into a New Year and organizing my goals and dreams for the months ahead!

I have to admit that I fell into the old cliche and spent three days in a row at the gym and tennis center after the 1st of the year.  It is one of my saving graces for the winter as the temperatures outside don’t have the same appeal they used to!  The indoor tennis center is a great source of exercise with a social bonus for the quiet winter months on the island.

We also have a YMCA on the island and it is great for my kids as it is just across the street from the High School.  We are very fortunate to have it so accessible and with great activities for all ages.

Wednesday Wonderings #WW Quality Bookings

First Time Vacation Renters on Martha’s Vineyard

Confused-Photo

Finding your perfect vacation rental property on Martha’s Vineyard may seem like a daunting task if you have never been to the island before.  Even though we are considered a small island, we have five towns with some very different flavors to each.  There are also many different booking opportunities out there for vacation rentals.  There may be something to be said for being able to go online and book your house in a few easy steps but it is important to have confidence in the services available upon arrival to the house.  We, at Sandpiper Rentals, are proud of the fact that we are here and available should there be an issue at the house or questions to be answered upon arrival.

Our agents are familiar with all of the houses in our inventory and truly love what they do.  They take great pride in matching a family with the right vacation home as that is often the vehicle for a fantastic time on the island and creates memories for a lifetime.   The best way to determine the perfect vacation rental is to have discussions regarding what you and your family would like to do while you are here.  Do you enjoy eating out regularly or would you prefer cooking in?  Is a state of the art kitchen important to you?  Would you prefer an “old Vineyard” style home in the woods with great walking paths or bike paths nearby?  How important is beach access and its proximity?  Do you want to be able to walk into town?  Knowing your family’s needs allows us to introduce you to the perfect rental option creating the perfect stepping stone to the perfect Martha’s Vineyard vacation.
