4th of July on Martha’s Vineyard

EBOT-DG-3-sm1With the 4th of July, just over a week away, I can’t help but to start to get excited! There is so many things happening on island, and it’s never too late to start making your plans. Whether it is a big family bbq, a day spent lazily on the beach, or taking part in the traditional 4th of july activities, there’s something for everyone. Below you’ll find some information on two of the biggest events on Martha’s Vineyard.

4TH OF JULY IN EDGARTOWN A tradition that has lasted several decades, the annual 4th of July parade starts promptly at 5 pm. The parade begins at the intersection of West Tisbury Road and Pinehurst Road. Next it takes a right onto Main Street and then a left onto Pease’s Point Way (next to the monument). It follows Pease’s Point Way and then takes a right onto Morse Street, a left onto Fuller Street and a right onto Thayer Street. At the end of Thayer it takes a right onto North Water Street. Next it takes a right up Main Street and pauses in front of the reviewing stand (in front of the Whaling Church). It continues up Main Street and then takes a left onto the West Tisbury Road and finishes at the Edgartown School. The fireworks typically start as soon as it is dark (typically 9 pm)

STARS AND STRIPES FESTIVAL Considered one of the most exciting shows of the summer, the 4th annual Stars and Stripes Festival is a rocking music festival that takes place at Flatbread Company near the airport. Tickets are $30 In advance / $35 Day of Show, 21+ Show ID.  First 100 guests to arrive receive a door prize! All Proceeds Benefit the YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard

The kick off for the social season starts Thursday with the highly anticipated Taste Of The Vineyard. Tickets are sold out, but if you hear of someone selling them (try checking out the Facebook group MV Stuff For Sale) snap them up asap because this is the one party you won’t want to miss. The Taste Of The Vineyard, or simply “The Taste” as locals call it, is a gourmet stroll through 85 different venders from the island offering you succulent amuse-bouche, or one bite tastings, and incredible libations of all varieties.

For the 21st year in a row, the Boston Area Roadsters gather at the Wesley House and around the Harbor of Oak Bluffs all culminating in an annual poker run to Aquinnah to raise money for local charities throughout Martha’s Vineyard. All around the island you’ll see antique, classic, and hot rods galore in this fantastic, fun for all ages gathering.

Local Wild Food Challenge

Feeling adventurous? Up for something new? Well then channel your inner Andrew Zimmerman from Bizarre Foods, and come to the Rod and Gun Club on Monday, October 14 at 3PM for the annual Local Wild Food Challenge!

What is the Local Wild Food Challenge you ask? It is a culinary adventure contest that anyone – 5 star zagat rated chef to hard working stay at home mom- can enter. The rules are simple. Prepare the best dish you can using at least one locally sourced ingredient.

So how does it work?
Source – dig, hunt, fish, and forage for as many local ingredients as possible. The harder you work for your ingredients the more points you’ll receive.
Harvest – Don’t forget to use locally grown items as well. Fresh herbs, spices, and fruits count for points as well.
Prep – Take the time to get your food as “pretty” as possible. Presentation is key; remember people eat with their eyes before anything else.
Enter – Submit your dish.

It’s that simple. Perhaps you don’t want to enter into the competition. That’s okay, because starting at 3, there are tastings all day long. So come down and enjoy a culinary adventure you won’t forget.
